These previously unreleased tracks and ‘dangerous thoughts’ engraved on x-ray films are unique vinyl-type records made with audio cut onto radiography film. X-ray records were made as an act of defiance against censorship in cold war era Soviet Union, where they were used as an underground method of distributing prohibited music by Western, emigre and banned Russian musicians. This unforgettable cultural response to state censorship is now presented as a contemporary reminder of the not-so-distant past and collected in the "Library of Dangerous Thoughts" supporting freedom of thinking and countercultures. This initiative is a call to inspire citizens of the world into creating further pluralistic platforms and to support free education. . Акция является отсылкой ко второй половине XX века, когда в СССР множество зарубежных песен были под запретом и их записывали «на костях» — на пленке для рентгена.
К проекту также присоединились американский философ Ноам Хомский, вокалист исландской рок-группы Sigur Rós Йонси и визуальный художник из Балтимора Алекс Сомерс.
Аудиозаписи уйдут с молотка на аукционе, а все вырученные средства направят на благотворительность. Кроме того, организаторы выпустили несколько фильмов и книгу о контрабанде музыки в СССР с помощью рентгенограмм.
В октябре 2018 года Massive Attack переиздали в формате ДНК альбом Mezzanine, вышедший в 1998 году. Ученые сжали аудиозаписи до 15 мегабайт, после чего закодировали двоичным кодом в ДНК-основания — аденин, цитозин, гуанин и тимин. Пластинку выпустили в виде спрея, однако в настоящее время доступных устройств, способных расшифровать ДНК, не существует.
